Best charging habits to extend your battery life
Simple, evidence-based charging habits for Tesla owners — with specific tips for LFP and NMC batteries.
Good habits don't require babying your car. A few simple changes can meaningfully slow battery degradation and protect your resale value.
First: know your battery type
Tesla uses two different battery chemistries, and the rules are different for each.
NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) — used in Model Y Long Range, Model Y Performance, Model 3 Long Range, and most older Teslas.
LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) — used in Model Y Standard Range (built in China, VIN starting with LRW), Model 3 Standard Range (China-built).

Habit 1: Set the right daily charge limit
NMC batteries: Set your daily charge limit to 80%. NMC cells age fastest when held near 100% — keeping them in the 20–80% range dramatically slows calendar aging. Tesla calls this the "Daily" setting. Reserve 100% only for long road trips, and drive soon after reaching full charge.
LFP batteries: Charge to 100% regularly — Tesla actually recommends this for LFP. Full charges help the battery management system (BMS) calibrate accurately. Set your charge limit to 100% for daily use.

Habit 2: Avoid sitting at extremes for long periods
Both battery types dislike being parked at very high or very low charge for extended periods.
- Before a long trip away: leave the car at 50–60%, not 100%
- Avoid letting the battery drop below 10% regularly
- If storing the car for weeks: aim for 50% and check occasionally
Habit 3: Use home charging as your default
Supercharging is convenient, but high-current DC charging generates heat — and heat accelerates degradation. Home AC charging is gentler on the battery.
Recommendation: Use home charging for daily top-ups. Use Superchargers for road trips or when you need a fast charge.

Habit 4: Don't ignore software updates
Tesla regularly improves battery management via over-the-air updates. Keeping your car updated means the BMS is operating with Tesla's latest calibration — which can affect both efficiency and longevity.
